The Common Place Book

Some of you may have heard of a common place book, and some may not.  It’s something I heard of a long time ago, but is not something I have truly learned to cherish until about a year ago.

Basically a common place book is a fancy phrase for a place you keep all your random thoughts. It is an old tradition (think 18th century; yes most of the founding fathers had one), but it still has place in our modern society.

The Common Place Book: What it is and Why You Need It

What Can I Use for a Common Place Book?
Anything really:

Your Phone
A Cute Notebook
Your Tablet

Really anything portable that you don’t mind carrying with you wherever you go.

Why Do I Need One?

If you’re like me, you usually have an idea running through your head.  Some times it is only one or two, but then the mother ship arrives, and suddenly you have a million flying around your brain.  That is when it is a good idea to write them down before you loose them.

Even if you don’t have any ideas coming to your head having a common place book can train you to think.  Once one idea comes and you write it down, more will follow.

What Goes Into A Common Place Book?

Keep a common place book to track new ideas, quotes, and inspirations you come across.

You can add anything you like:

Quotes
Your random thoughts and ideas
Something hilarious a guy on the bus said
Feelings
Journal like entries

A common place book is anything you want it to be.  It doesn’t have to be neat or orderly.  It can be a list of broken sentences which come to your head that you don’t want to forget.

It can be your refined philosophy about what makes a butterfly happy.

It can be a note to yourself not to forget to buy more milk.
